FRAMEWORK SPOTLIGHT

If You Don’t Understand The Work, Don’t Apply

I have a theory: Most people don’t actually have a job search problem. They have a job description interpretation problem.

And it’s not their fault.

Today, I want to show you how to actually read a job description, so you can make better decisions, avoid mismatches, and stop wasting time on roles that were never right to begin with.

The Problem No One Talks About

Job descriptions are supposed to help you make informed decisions, but most of them don’t. They’re written to attract and impress candidates, not to clearly explain what the job actually is.

So instead of clarity, you get:

  • Vague responsibilities

  • Overlapping buzzwords

  • Inflated job titles that mean nothing

  • Polished language that hides the real work

And the result? People apply to roles they don’t fully understand… then end up confused, frustrated, or stuck in jobs that don’t match what they expected.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

What You Should Actually Look For

When you read a job description, you don’t need to read everything. You need to read the right things. Here’s what actually matters:

1. The Work (Not the Words)
Ask yourself: What will I actually be doing every day?

Skip the company overview, mission, and storytelling. It’s helpful context, but it won’t tell you what your day-to-day looks like, and focus on the tasks. That’s where the truth is.

2. The Work Hidden Behind the Title
Job titles are often misleading. So, instead of focusing on the title, ask:
What type of work is this role actually centered around?

A role labeled “strategy,” “operations,” or “marketing” might actually function as sales, project management, or internal coordination. If you only search by title, you’ll miss better-fit opportunities.

3. The Problems Behind the Role
Ask: What problems am I being hired to solve?

Every role exists because something is broken, missing, or needs to grow. If you don’t understand the problem, you don’t understand the job.

4. What’s Actually Required (vs. What’s Listed)
Ask: What do I need to be able to do on day one?

Not everything in a job description is truly required. Asking this question helps you separate real expectations from “nice-to-haves”, and evaluate whether the role is realistic for you right now.

5. The Filter Most People Skip
Once you understand the work and the problems, ask:

Do I actually want to solve these problems every day?

This is where most people get it wrong, because they get distracted by the company, salary, or title. But if the problems don’t interest you, the job won’t either, no matter how good it looks on paper.

6. Where This Role Leads
Ask: If I stay in this role for 1-2 years, what doors does it open?

Every role is either a stepping stone, or a detour. And by entertaining this job, you are shaping what comes next on your career journey.

A Better Way to Approach Your Career

A lot of people think they’re in the wrong industry, the wrong role, or behind in their career. But most of the time, they’ve just been making decisions based on incomplete information.

Today, I want you to make me a pinky promise.

Say, “I will stop mass apply to jobs, and instead, I will take the time to better understand the ones that I’m already looking at.”

How will you do that?

I’m glad you asked! Before you submit your next application, pause and ask yourself:

  • Do I actually understand what this job is?

  • Do I like the problems I’d be solving?

  • Am I choosing this role, or just reacting to what’s available?

When you’re on the hunt for new opportunities, the ultimate goal isn’t just to get any type of job. At the end of the day, you should be choosing the jobs that will help you reach your long term career goals.

P.S. If you want help applying this framework during your job search, I built a Job Decoder Tool that breaks job descriptions into what actually matters, so you can quickly understand the day-to-day work, the problems you’d be solving, and whether the role is a real fit before you apply.
